A local tip. Go here instead of the Washington Monument if you are traveling with young kids, or old parents. FREE!

I put this one in here as a tip to all those families visiting Washington D.C. with kids in strollers. This is a tip known to local residents, but it is not something that is heavily publicized in the tourist areas.

Washington D.C. has an ordinance that no building can be taller than the Washington Monument. This means that going up in the monument affords you a great view of the city. Unfortunately, there is usually a long line, and a lot of stairs between you and the great view. That is where the Old Post Office comes in.

The Old Post Office is just that. It is a beautiful old building that was once the Post Office for Washington D.C. It is now a multi-use building. The important thing is that the National Park Service runs short tours of the bell tower. The Old Post Office bell tower is the second highest structure in D.C. and it is located 2 blocks off the National Mall.

Your views here at the Old Post Office will be just as spectacular, and you can enjoy an elevator ride up to the top. When you are finished, you can visit the large food court on the first floor of the building to enjoy a lunch, and then hit a couple of the shops to pick up some souvenirs. All of this can be done in the comfort of an air-coditioned building (a necessity on hot D.C. summer days.)

So, enjoy the Old Post Office, and on your way out stop to see the real FDR memorial.

Additional Reviews:

Sam:  “This is a beautiful old building."

Will: "The food court can feed anyone. They have everything there."
