Review: by Mom

Having been D.C. area residents at one time, we (Mom and Dad) have spent a considerable amount of time in this zoo. It's an enduring favorite. The animals are well-cared-for, signage is clear and plentiful, and there are a number of animals that are not found elsewhere in the States. First of these, of course, is the Giant Panda. The National Zoo has the only successful panda breeding program in the United States, and the opportunity to see a panda baby brings a smile to all who visit. We have also been impressed by the Think Tank, an enrichment area for orangutans which allows them to enter and exit at will. They do so by taking the “Oranga Line,” which is a set of cables strung high above the pedestrian walkway. The orangutans swing back and forth between their home enclosure and the Think Tank as the mood strikes them. The activities provided by the staff get the animals thinking and permits study of their behavior in a way that we've never witnessed at another zoo. Other notable experiences include a marital spat between two tigers (Mrs. Tiger always got the last word!), baby monkeys tormenting their parents, screaming bonobos, elephants at work, and adorable cheetah cubs.

There's a great coffee shop/bakery just around the corner from the Metro (Woodley Park/Zoo stop on the Red Line) and the restaurants along Connecticut Ave. are varied, reasonably priced and delicious.

Additional Review:

Dad: We were lucky enough to be there when a baby panda had just met the public. It was amazing to watch him play in the trees. Also, one of my favorite things to do at this zoo is to watch the naturalists talk about the elephants. If you get a chance don't miss it, as the cleaning of these great beasts alone is worth the wait.

Will: The cheetahs had babies when we were there. They were super cute!
