Recommendation

This is a good two-hour museum if you are in the area.

Review: by Dad

I grew up going to this museum. It was a short bus ride from my home. There is nothing like growing up near a major university to feed young minds. My many visits to the fossil room in the basement played a major role in the development of my love of science. The T-Rex skull was awe inspiring.

In the years that have followed I have visited many grander museums, but this one still holds a place in my heart. On our recent visit, the boys had a great time. There is a fantastic room of birds, and the bones in the basement are about the same. The elephant and mammoth skeletons standing side by side still inspire as you ascend to the top of the third floor. Recent outstanding additions are the full allosaurus and stegosaurus skeletons on the top floor.

An interesting side note: When I worked for the college I had to help move the elephant skin of the individual in the picture below. The skin took the shape of a 3 foot grey rough cube. It weighed about 200 pounds, and made for a very difficult afternoon of work.

Mom: If you are a runner, you may want to time your visit to coincide with the annual "Dino Dash" 5K. It's a fun race on a beautiful course, and proceeds go to improving the dinosaur collection at the museum. The race is run in the fall.

Will:  “Personally I liked everything in this museum, especially the dinosarurs."

Sam: "The butterfly collection was great."
