This is one of the great natural history museums in the U.S. It is worthy of the 3rd largest city in the country.
I have been to the Field Museum so many times I have lost count. My first visit was when I was 3, but I don't really remember that one. Every time I have been there it was a little different. They have a wonderful dinosaur and fossil collection. One of the highlights is the giant ground sloth. They have a wide variety of "stuffed animals" and many cultural displays. The Field Museum has one of the largest collection of mummies anywhere outside Egypt. These are not just the mummies you would expect, but also mummified cats, dogs, and birds. I have found some of the other exhibits to be really interesting too. One of the best is the meteors. The prehistoric man ex
hibit which includes an ice age shelter is amazing. The new evolution exhibit is one of the best things I've seen in any museum.
We have also seen some great traveling exhibits when we have visited. We were able to see a collection of relics from Pompeii, and King Tut's tomb. We also got to see some of the new dinosaurs that have been found in China, and a great exhibit on mythical creatures and possible origins of the myths. We are planning on visiting when the mummified baby mammoth is on exhibit sometime in 2010. All in all, this museum is definitely worth the price of admission.
Additional Review:
Dad: TEACHERS GET IN FREE (but you have to ask!) Show your school ID or insurance card to receive this perk. We have usually parked at Soldier Field, just across from the museum. It is easy to get in and out of, and the Museum entrance is only a short walk. There is a McDonalds in the basement, but we always eat at the Corner Bakery, near Sue (the T-Rex) on the first floor. The price is a little higher, but the food is healthier and there's more selection. Also, one of the highlights of my college career was attending a symposium on extinction here. I toured the facility behind the scenes and even met Louis Alvarez! The Field Museum is part of the Museum Campus of Chicago. Also within walking distance are the Adler Planetarium and Shedd Aquarium.
Will: The gift shop is great! There is something for all ages. It is also in all price ranges. There are some high-priced items, so make sure you stay close to your parents.
