All over the web, and the tourist information for D.C. there is information about the new FDR Memorial. It is a great memorial on a beautiful location on the National Mall. If you are a local, or a frequent visitor to the D.C. area, you know that it is a city of small monuments also. This is one of those.
The original FDR Memorial is right outside the Old Post Office. It is just a block of marble with an inscription on it, but he story behind this is a good one.
It seems a friend of FDR asked him how he would like to be remembered, as he was seen as a great president. FDR was taken aback by this and said that if anyone felt any strong desire to memorialize him that it should be a small monument. He pointed at his desk and said it shouldn't be any larger than this piece of furniture.
When FDR died, his friend got the money together to commission a marble monument exactly the size of his Oval Office desk.
Stop by and take a look at it, and remember this great President in a manner he felt appropriate.
